Vet student at Edinburgh. Turning Vegan and supporting changes to production animal welfare.

The best way to promote vegan lifestyles is to show the bad is unavoidable.

Showing the extreme makes people think alternative ways are okay - ‘free range’ ‘humane slaughter’ etc. But show these ‘humane’ ways, show them it still isn’t right.

Man (Homo sapiens sapiens), Cow (Bos taurus), and Ram (Ovis aries)
The structure of the ruminant animals varies considerably. It’s important for the artist to recognize the vertebral layout and rib structure, even of animals that are covered in thick wool or fur. Wild bovids (such as bison) and aurochs have extended thoracic vertebrae that form a “hump” over their shoulders.

The donkey’s owner attended a workshop given by FACE (Farm Animal Centre for Education) and ROAR (Rhodes Organization for Animal Rights). Ill health in both humans and animals is often caused by pollution such as litter. The link between social injustice and animal liberation is often one that goes unnoticed. © Kate Janse van Rensburg

People need to be aware of the way we use all animals. But I watched earthlings and thought it misrepresents the industries. Non vegans will dismiss it as it is extreme, as it shows very specific cases of negligence. The truth should be bad enough to shock people. Show the truth. The truth is that farming and slaughter for the most part follows protocol (yes there are workers who go against) that is monitored and inspected. The fact that we keep so many animals in unnatural conditions, in huge groups, without access outdoors, slaughter, take away young, leave them more susceptible to contagious disease, physical and mental harm… This should be bad enough. Don’t just show extreme malpractice. Show everyday farming.
